Munnings Birthday Lecture: Ripley

Date: 7 October 2017
Time: 12:00

Location: The Munnings Art Museum, Castle Hill, Dedham, Colchester, Essex, CO7 6AZ

Ripley creates artworks using the highest resolution medium-format cameras currently available in combination with extensive work in post-production. This process gives him the foundation upon which to produce work of extremely fine detail, clarity and scale, creating anatomically precise portraits of horses which would be impossible to achieve by any other means.

Influenced by equine artists such as George Stubbs, Sir Alfred Munnings, John Frederick Herring, and Emil Adams (to name a few) and also bronze sculpture, Ripley’s working methods aren’t that dissimilar from a traditional painter's, the only difference being that he deals with real elements initially captured by photography.

With 25 years worth of knowledge and experience of high-end photography, lighting, and complex retouching techniques (Beckham to Beyonce, Lexus to Lamborghini, and a Hasselblad Judge for the Hasselblad International Masters Awards 2011/12 and 2015/16) Ripley’s personal passion for the genre of equine portraiture has already bought many special moments; from working with great horses such as Postponed, California Chrome, Big Bucks, and Galileo Gold, to being commissioned in 2016 to do the official portrait of Estimate (in foal) for Her Majesty The Queen.
