Proximity - supporting tourism businesses

OUTSTANDING LANDSCAPES AND OUR VISITORS
Supporting tourism businesses to attract nearby visitors

How can we help support tourism businesses to market local distinctiveness more effectively? Businesses are our local experts, but do you realise that tourists are increasingly interested in the ‘local story’, be it history, landscape or even interesting anecdotes attached to the businesses themselves?

The AONBs of the Suffolk and Essex offered training and awareness opportunities to encourage more businesses to celebrate local distinctiveness and provide visitors with tangible reasons for holidaying closer to home.  This included inviting businesses to complete an interactive quiz, tailored specifically to the local AONB environment and unique local landscape. The online quiz tests their knowledge of local sustainable tourism issues, including wildlife and habitat, local community and landscape.

This Outstanding Landscapes activity, under a project title of Proximity, included a partnership formed in early 2014 of ten organisations from France, The Netherlands, Belgium and the UK. Together we have been sharing information and supporting tourism businesses to attract nearby neighbours.
