Hedgehog Friendly Village Project

Visiting a hedgehog friendly garden

The hedgehog is a priority species in the Dedham Vale AONB Nature Recovery Plan. We have been working on a pilot project with the East Bergholt community to create a Hedgehog Friendly village.

As part of the project, on Saturday 5th March a free Walk & Talk event took place in the village. We had a great morning in East Bergholt with 23 people learning about the Hedgehog Friendly Village project from the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and East Bergholt Futures group.

Suffolk Wildlife Trust did an excellent talk on hedgehogs and local hedgehog friendly gardens were visited to show how to garden in a more sensitive way for our spiky friends. Everyone went away inspired and pledged to do more for hedgehogs in their gardens and local street.

Some of our volunteers involved in the project have become veterinary rehabbers – where they rehome hedgehogs from vets! Find out more about the Dedham Vale Hedgehog Friendly Village project.
